History

The 70s-80s Project
The project to create a French-speaking university dedicated to African development was born at the Summit of Heads of State and Government of French-speaking countries, held in May 1989 in Dakar. This ambitious initiative aimed to provide Africa with a higher education institution capable of training highly qualified African executives.

Senghor University officially opens its doors in Alexandria, Egypt. It bears the name of Léopold Sédar Senghor, a major figure in the Francophonie, who played a central role in promoting French-speaking identity around the world.

Founding Texts
Senghor University was created by the Conference of Heads of State and Government of French-speaking countries at the Dakar Summit in May 1989. Its statutes and operations are governed by founding texts that guarantee its academic independence and mission in service of African development.
